Why Choose Cloudways over Shared Hosting?
If we had a quid for every time our clients told us they didn’t want to pay “that much” for hosting, then complained when their site was not performing as it should, then we could probably shut shop and retire early.
So, if you are a business owner, potential client or website owner that is wondering “why is my website so flipping slow…” read on…
If you have a business that you are serious about, stay away from shared hosting
It’s easy to get sucked into the low cost offers from the likes of GoDaddy and Hostgator. “Wow! Only £5 a month to host my website, why on earth do I need to spend more?”
After all, it’s just a place on the web, and as long as it’s visible then who cares who is hosting it?
Shared hosting is the equivalent of renting an apartment in a busy block. You don’t know who your neighbours are, how noisy they are going to be and if the one above you has a leak, then you are going to know about it.
With shared hosting you are sharing the resources on that server. That means that you are not the only website on that server. If another website starts to affect the resources in some way, then the performance of your website will be affected, even if it’s not your fault.
So going back to the apartment block, if your friendly neighbour decides to have an all night party, or have a leak and suddenly you feel a drip on your nose while your sleeping, then your stuck with that. Until the landlord arrives.
So let’s move downtown where the view is a littler bit nicer!
Cloud VPS, a cost effective solution for your business to grow online
We know what your are thinking “WTF is a VPS? And why do I need one?”
In a nutshell a VPS is an isolated hosting environment. You can choose to keep it to yourself for a single website or share it with other websites.
Years ago it was a expensive option which tied you into contracts for years, so if your business failed you would have been stuck with the cost of the server for anything up to three years.
Today, you can start a server and shut it off seconds later.
Sounds technical, I don’t want to learn about server management!
Well of course you don’t. No business owner in their right mind would want to learn how to spin up servers, manage them and maintain them. We bet, you have better things to do right?
Only joking, I am happy to save some money and learn how to manage my own server
Well, ok then! Click here to learn how to spin up your own server on Digital Ocean and run your websites the way you want to! By the way, clicking on our link gets you a free $100 credit to get started with, so get going!
I want my server to manage itself
Of course you do! The holy grail! A managed server, well you have come to the right place my friend!
Let’s talk Cloudways!
You can think of cloudways as a dashboard that helps non technical people manage their cloud hosting environment.
If this window, scares the crap out of you…
And you would much rather look at this
Then you need cloudways!
The cold harsh truth about cloud hosting is that in order to get the best out of it, then you are going to have to do one of two things, well maybe three!
- Learn the command line, google commands, watch you tube videos and then compile then into some sort of readable format. Hope that the commands still work after an update or ten.
- Hire an expert website development team to manage your webiste and hosting for you. Yes, that us by the way and we are happy to help!
- Sign up for a managed hosting account through cloudways and spin up your own server.
Whilst Cloudways costs twice as much for the same service on digital ocean, you really have to weight up how much your time is worth. Even as a website development business with an in-house developer that knows how their way around a linux system, we prefer to use Cloudways.
Reasons to choose Cloudways over going direct to the cloud provider
You can spin up a website very quickly without going through a command line utility with any cloud provider, you need to run some commands to spin up a site. Let me show you that window again…
In Cloudways it’s as simple as pressing the “Add Application” button and your set!
Securing the site is just as easy with the SSL option 🙂
And if you mess something up and need to roll back, then Cloudways lets you do that.
You can keep a months worth of backups and restore to any point.
Without Cloudways, managing backups without a WordPress plugin is a very tedious process. At Pixaful we keep our client sites backed up in multiple locations with server backups and offsite backups
For a business owner, the above gives you the most basic level of server admin that you need. Install, secure and backup! But of course with a cloud envvironment you get a much deeper level of control over your sever than you would get with a shared hosting environment. Things like max_execution limit and upload size for example
And disk cleanup.
The point we are trying to make here is that Cloudways makes it very easy to manage a website for a business owner. You don’t have to look at a command line window and have options that are normally unavailable to you even with a command line interface. Backups for example would need to be automated.
If you are the type of business owner that enjoys tinkering with their site and you make a mess. There isn’t a command line facility available out of the box that will give you automated backups that you can restore at any time. There are services available for cloud backups which we will cover in another blog post, but truth be told, by the time you add on this service to your cloud hosting then cost wise, you might as well just go with Cloudways!
The real selling point for using Cloudways with any of their connected partners is speed.
Clooudways has some secret sauce going on that we have not yet managed to replicate on our own Digital Ocean droplet. We run load tests on Digital Ocean, but keep our client sites on Cloudways.
If we could match the speed and security that Cloudways gives us, believe us we would drop it in a heartbeat.
Cloudways has optimised it’s WordPress stack so well that it gives our already fast an extra speed bump!
One thing to note about our site is that it works pretty well out of the box without any optimisation so this does not come as any surprise to us.
Cloudways uses a caching system called varnish and say that this is one of many layers of caching that is used.
We have tried to replicate this ourselves on Digital Ocean but so far have not managed to do this, it can be done but we need more time to figure it out.
On our Digital Ocean account that is seperate from our CloudWays account we use a package called WordOps, this creates sites for us using teh command line window. It also sets up the caching for us. What we found was that GTMetrix struggled to real our site and give us results.
We migrated a copy of our site over to a test domain and our Digital Ocean account. The server and ram size is exactly the same, so we can only imagine the missing incredient being caching!
Honestly, most website owners would be happy with this score, but we want more!
Cloudways makes this very easy for us, as developers, marketers and business owners we value our time and know when it’s time to stop mucking about in the command line and just pay Cloudways for their excellent service!
